Abilene Fishing NewsLargemouth Bass: Good Catfish: Fair Crappie: Good Sunfish: Fair After several years of low water levels, this lake nearly filled in fall 2004 when it came within one foot of spillway level. The lake was stocked with channel catfish and blue catfish in 2004, and largemouth bass and white crappie in 2005. Boat access is highly dependent on water level. High to moderate levels bring fair to good fishing for catfish, crappie and largemouth bass. At low levels, bank fishing may be the only option and fishing success usually declines. PREDOMINANT FISH SPECIES Largemouth Bass (aka Black Bass, Green Trout, Bigmouth Bass, Lineside Bass) Channel Catfish (aka Willow Cat, Forked-Tail Cat, Fiddler, Spotted Cat, Lady Cat) White Crappie (aka White Perch, Sac-a-lait) Bass Identification Guide Channel and Blue Catfish Identification Guide LAKE RECORDS STOCKING HISTORY LATEST LAKE SURVEY REPORT FISHING COVER / STRUCTURE When full, Lake Abilene can offer a variety of fishing cover including black willow trees, button bush, rocky structure, and dead terrestrial vegetation. Cover is primarily limited to brush piles and rocks when the reservoir is low. AQUATIC VEGETATION None. TIPS & TACTICS Historically, flipping brushy cover for largemouth bass and crappie was a good technique, especially since the water is so muddy. Look for some good catfishing from the bank in the next couple of years as these fish take advantage of all the nutrients. FISHING REGULATIONS Being located within a state park, this lake is regulated as a Community Fishing Lake. CREDITS "Lake Abilene", Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Web.
